What do we expect from national burn patient federation members?
Statistics and why? The first step in policy and decision making is getting the right data from the right people.
The targets of this are clear:
To increase the knowledge amongst EU decision makers of burn injuries and fatalities, about what caused them (analysis) and about what we can do to prevent them ( fire safety issues). This will be done by collecting complete and reliable EU burn injury and fatalities statistics in order to improve EU policy and regulations on burn prevention activities (smoke detection, fire safety of consumer products, domestic escape plans) and after care (reimbursement support for patients). EBCA will set a focus on the areas where the most burn injuries and fatalities occur to be able to decrease the number of burn fatalities every year.
EBCA wants to know first about the number of fires, domestic and non domestic.
Burn patients are, in Europe, classified in four different ways, depending on the source that gathers them:
- fire fighters
- hospitals
- rehab centers
- insurance companies
None of these four sources is consistent with one of the others, which does not allow the EU policy makers as well as national governments to make the right decisions regarding fire safety, prevention, hospital and after care, etc.
